Come As You Aren't

Last night was the annual Halloween block party here in Dallas. They block off "The Strip" in the gayborhood and everyone (gay, straight, young, old) packs the street. Some are dressed up, others are just there to view the mayhem. Adam, Brad, Dorothee, Jay, Karlo, Terrance and I partook in the whole mess.

Adam and Brad dressed up as the Mario Bros. and were a smash! They couldn't take two steps w/o someone telling them their costumes were great and/or getting their picture taken. Yes, there were other Mario Bros. out there, but Adam and Brad really were the best of the lot.

Here are some pics from the night:

You're A Champion, Charlie Brown

I've been searching for this SNL skit for years and I finally found it today. I was having a rather frustrating day today, but finding this changed all of that. It's HI-larious! Go on now, laugh your ass off...

State Fairies

This Sunday, a bunch of us went to the closing day of the State Fair Of Texas. While I have lived in Dallas for four years now, I had never gone until this year. I didn't enjoy spending $13 to enter to find out that I had to also pay to ride any of the rides or do pretty much anything other than walk around. But I ended up having a good time because of the company. Here are some pics:

Put Your Records On 06.10 : Yodel Lay Hee Hoo

Miss Shit Is Bananas is back! Her new album, The Sweet Escape, is due in stores December 5. Recorded back in the spring before her baby was born and she says the sound is different from Love.Angel.Music.Baby. While that album had a retro vibe, she says this new one is very modern sounding. The first single, Wind it Up, sounds interesting. I can't decide if I like it or not. Let me know what you think.

Dress Up In You 06.09

This week's song is a cover of a cover. Actually, I don't know if Stereophonics are trying to cover Sinead O'Connor's version or Prince's, since I haven't actually heard Prince's version. Whichever it is, this is a pretty basic cover. The only change from Sinead's version come from reworking it as coming from a guy.

As for the lead singer, he is mighty dreamy. I remember when they first hit the scene, he sounded eerily similar to Rod Stewart. Thankfully, he doesn't sound so much like him in this song.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Celebracion

Here are some pictures from my sister's wedding.

Just Plain Ugly Betty

Three episodes into this series and I can't tell any of them apart. It's the same basic plot every time: Betty's boss (the editor-in-chief of a successful fashion magazine and son of the owner) is trying to prove himself, Betty is ridiculed by her co-workers because she is ugly, Betty eventually screws something up, both her and her boss fear they are going to lose their jobs, Vanessa Williams' character tries to see to it that they lose their jobs and then Betty and boss make a last minute recovery to save the latest issue. The first episode was cute (despite playing like a watered down version of the far superior summer smash The Devil Wears Prada), but the second and third episodes have not shown much promise. For some reason, though, I really want this show to succeed. I just haven't determined why.

Has anyone else been watching this? What do you think?

Lovely

For all my bitching about my Vegas weekend, I've decided it wasn't all that bad. It's funny how one (really) good thing can make you forget about everything else that wasn't. Okay, so there were actually two good things if you include my sister's wedding, but I wasn't. *sigh*

Anyway, here are some pics from the weekend like I promised (pics of the wedding coming later)

John Legend is back with a new album titled Once Again. He’s veered a little from his first album, the grammy winning Get Lifted, and it’s paid off mighty handsomely. He’s infused these tracks w/ a retro feel, but they are still surging w/ currency. Something tells me he’ll hear his name called again come Grammy night. Here are a few of the stand out tracks…

A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Part III

Finally, I ventured out w/o anyone else. The one place I knew (from my also disastrous trip to Vegas last year) was a little place called Krave. I had never been, but had walked past it when I was trying to find my drunk boyfriend (thankfully he’s my ex now) that was wondering the streets. Krave wasn’t at all what I was expecting. I was thinking something more along the lines of JR’s (which you’d know what I’m talking about if you lived in Dallas or Houston). Much to my delight, it was a nightclub. I had something to watch (people dancing), so I wouldn’t just be leaning against the wall or something. As I walked around surveying the club, I noticed that there was a stage out on the dance floor. On the stage, there was a couch, and, stretched out on the couch was a guy (dressed only in underwear, of course). At first, I thought he was performing and was just going to be on the couch for a moment, but he never budged. That was his job, to site on stage and lay on a couch. Even when there were others that would come out and do some strip-teasing. But I’ll move on. For most of the evening, I was just standing around. Okay, not entirely true. Yes, I was just standing there, but there was a guy that I think was showing some interest. He, too, was there alone. We started off not too close to each other, but eventually we found ourselves standing right next to each other. Of course, neither of us would make eye contact w/ each other nor make the first move. He eventually ventured off somewhere else in the club and I saw him talking to some guy. Then, as I walked past him, this Keith (of Project Runway 3) look-alike asked his hag what she thought of me. I don’t think that I was supposed to have heard him (although maybe I was) asking her to give him her opinion of me, but I did and noticed that I didn’t get very high marks from her. Which I was thankful for, cause Keith isn’t cute at all.

Then there was stalker boy. I thought stalker boy was cute at first, but he quickly turned weird after the first time we made eye contact. Normally, when I make eye contact w/ someone that I am interested in and that is interested in me, a smile or something is exchanged. Stalker Boy didn’t do anything but stare. It made me uncomfortable. If someone is looking directly at me for a long period of time, I find it incredibly difficult to look at them. Stalker Boy kept moving around, too. I’d start feeling eyes on me, and I’d turn and there he was. But not standing out in the open. He would kind of hide behind objects and people. It was just weird and I quickly grew uninterested. That’s when I walked past this gorgeous latin boy. He had these beautiful dark eyes that just sucked me right in. Of course, because he showed interest, I panicked and just kept walking past him. And, as usual, once I had built up enough courage to approach him, I couldn’t find him. At this point, they closed down the club and the party moved to the bar next door. Typically, this is the point when everyone in Dallas pretty much goes home, so I went to the coat check and got my coat. As I was walking to the exit, though, I noticed that essentially everyone was going to the bar (I forgot that they don’t stop serving alcohol as they do here). I was still going to leave, but then made eye contact w/ the cute boy again. I made it to the exit door and was about to walk out when I turned around and went back. I didn’t really have the money, but I bought some more drinks just so I had something to do other than stand there looking pathetic.

Cute boy and his girl eventually ended up over by me. We continued making eye contact and were both smiling. I still couldn’t walk over to him, though. That’s when two guys bumped into me trying to get to the bar (which I was leaning against). They apologized and then started asking me if I was by myself and from out of town. They seemed friendly enough, so I thought, what the hey, and decided to work on my social skills a little. We chatted for a while and they eventually started introducing me to their friends. And guess who one of their friends was? No, not Stalker Boy (who, btw, was still stalking me from a distance and was not thrilled about me making friends despite the fact he had found someone). It was cute boy! Actually, he does have a name – Abraham. Turns out that, while he understands English, he speaks very little of it. So we couldn’t really have a conversation, but, you know, that’s not really what I wanted from him anyway. JUST KIDDING!!! Contrary to popular belief, I am not a whore! Haha. We exchanged phone numbers and e-mail address, but agreed to meet up for lunch Sunday (the following day) before I left. Sadly, he never called or anything. It isn’t like I was expecting much, I mean; we don’t even live in the same state. Maybe he was just too nervous about the whole language barrier w/o his friend there to help translate. I don’t know. What I do know is that he seemed very interested, but maybe I was mistaken.

As for the flight home…worst flight ever! For me, at least. I’ve been flying for well over 15 years now, and this was the first time I honestly thought that something bad was going to happen. The plane hit a little turbulence and the fasten seat belt light came on. Fine. Then it wasn’t fine. The plane was shaking, dropping (or at least it felt like it) and other terribly fun things. The captain came on and calmly asked the passengers to take their seats. Then it got worse, especially the dropping. The captain came back on, and, w/ a little more urgency, said, “flight attendants please be seated.” Not two seconds later and after another big drop, he gets on and yells, “flight attendants SIT DOWN NOW!!” They had been ignoring him up until this point. That’s when I really started panicking. I really felt like this was it and immediately started planning my escape route and who I was going to have to push out of my way as I tried to escape the plane. Okay, I wouldn’t do that, but I was trying to brace myself for the possibility of a crash. Thankfully, we eventually leveled out and landed safely. Although, once on the ground, we lost all power on the plane twice!

Okay, so that's really it for the bitching. I seriously have not had time to upload pictures yet, but will try to do so tonight.

A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Part II

Okay, the bitch fest continues:

My mother didn’t want to take a cab and tried to book a sedan or limo only a few hours before the ceremony. However, there was a school dance and a convention (that brought in several thousand extra people) that prevented us from finding an available car, so they decided to just rent a van. Which ended up being for the best, but I’ll get into that later. She had the wedding at the fabulous Artisan Hotel. The interior is very eclectic. The lobby is full of leather chairs, a piano, a fountain, plants, large decorative vases, columns, etc. All randomly placed. There really was too much stuff crammed into the room, but it was surprisingly comfy and inviting. I’m actually planning to stay there the next time I visit, which, from what my sister told me, the guests are predominately gay. Back to the wedding…I’m getting off topic. I arranged the flowers and candles in the chapel, as that was the task my sister assigned me. I’m guessing because I’m gay, and straight people always seem to think that you have a flair for flower arrangements and interior decorating simply because you’re a fag. Why is that? Oh, right, stereotypes. I didn’t mind, though, as it wasn’t much work and she had already told me basically how she wanted it to look.

Now, my sister likes to drink. It seems that every time that I’m around her and her now husband (btw, they live in Baltimore, MD), they end up getting drunk. Do I think all they do is drink? No. I don’t believe they have a problem. It’s just that every time we get together, it seems to be for some kind of celebration. Anyway, to calm her nerves, she requested liquor…and lots of it. Now, she’s the type of person that makes people think she’s strong and, often, cold (i.e. – a bitch). However, the buzz helped show a different side of her. She arrived at the hotel in tears (of joy), which eventually evolved into sobbing. Even w/ the crying and stuff, she still made a beautiful bride.

(((I will add the pictures and video later – I have them, but it would take to long to upload them here and I’m exhausted)))

The drinking continued at the small reception immediately following the wedding. While they are having a formal reception in April (when they can afford it), they still wanted to have a little something (i.e. – cake, wine, etc.) at the actual event. As I said, the drinking continued. Everyone (except me and my mother) was drinking a lot. I had one glass of wine. My sister, well, I don’t know all that she had, but she was shit-faced. You could tell because you could hear her talking throughout the hotel. It was funny and nice to see a somewhat more relaxed Carrie. Although, she ended up drinking far too much and spilled her drink all over my $250 phone and my clothes (which I was wearing at the time, so it was all over me, as well).

Now, I’m only going to post this portion here because nobody in my family reads this…you all know what typically happens when you don’t eat and you drink lots and lots of alcohol! We had just made it to her hotel (which thankfully was off the strip and; therefore, not thousands of witnesses) and barely got the door open before it all came back up. There was vomit in the car, on the street and on her dress. Her (bio- and step-) parents helped her in to the room and took care of her. Yes, her husband was also pretty drunk and not too much help. I felt bad for my sister, but I wasn’t going to stick around for that. Besides, I was already feeling queasy again thanks to smelling the vomit. This, btw, was all I could smell the rest of the trip!

So, after seeing my dad, dealing w/ the racist cabbie, rushing around town, making sure everything was set up for the wedding and dealing w/ an upchucking bride, I was in need of an adult beverage. Several, in fact. This meant that I wanted some time away from the family, so I text messaged the amazing Chad Fox to see if he knew of any gay clubs or places where there were predominately gay people. I’m the only gay person in my family and have always felt too separate from everyone, so I really just wanted to be in a more comfortable environment. You know, one where I’m judged by my appearance and not for liking to suck dick. I also didn’t want to go alone, because I’m not the type of person that can go out and make friends wherever I go. I’m very quiet and reserved, and only slightly less so as I get comfortable around you. I also can come across as unapproachable. It’s all due to my social anxiety (which I’m overcoming slowly but surely). So, when Chad mentioned that he knew someone that was in Vegas, I begged him to ask the guy to hang out w/ me. I was desperate at this point. I was hoping I’d get a call before my parents went to dinner, but didn’t and ended up having to go w/ them. This turned out to be eventful, too. My mother likes to argue. If there’s nothing to argue about, she’ll find something. We were all having a talk in the room prior to leaving. We were chatting and laughing and having a good ol’ time. Then, out of nowhere, my mother just starts biting my step-father’s head off about some look that he allegedly gave her. We were just about to walk out the door anyway, but she stormed out, got on an elevator (not holding it for us) and, we assumed, was going to be waiting for us down at the elevators. Nope, she had wondered off into the casino. Now, it would have been one thing if she had wanted her own space, but she was throwing her usual tempter tantrum and was expecting us to track her down.

I did, and thankfully was alone when I did. I asked her what the hell she was doing (which is not like me, but at this point I was so sick and tired of listening to her bitch about stuff). She started whining about how my step-dad had made some look when she made a comment to him, but I cut her off. I told her that her behavior was unbecoming and inappropriate. She tried to say that we were all ganging up on her back in the room and that her husband was always saying things to her in an attempt to embarrass her in front of others. I reminded her that she does the same thing to him. She denied it, but I told her that she does it all of the time. She says really mean things and I know it hurts his feelings…because he’s told me. I told her that she needed to talk to her husband about it, and not to yell or anything. She needs to learn to have a calm discussion w/ someone rather than just instantly going off on them. She agreed to talk to him, but told me that she was insulted that he didn’t have the nerve to come to her. I reminded her that we were all looking for her, but that I was the one that found her, and I made her go to him. She didn’t talk the entire ride to the restaurant, but I caught them talking as we walked through the casino. She eventually got in a better mood. She just needed to be put in her place. It felt good standing up to my mother for a change. I’m going to do it more often now.

The guy never called, so I ended up having dinner w/ my mother, step-dad and aunt. It took them over an hour to decide on a restaurant, another hour to actually leave to drive there and another 45 just to get into the restaurant. At this point, my nerves were pretty much shot. They made me wait 30 minutes after the meal so they could gamble, even though they knew I was itching to get out on my own (had to go back to the hotel to change and stuff).

A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Part I

I should really be asleep right now; however, I have had relatively no rest this weekend and it has thrown me off a bit. So I thought I would put myself to work and work on this here blog for a change. I'm warning you, though, this is a long one, so I'm breaking it up into multiple posts.

My weekend excursion to Las Vegas started on Friday the 13th. You can pretty much guess the way the rest of the weekend went...ha! It was interesting to say the least. There were a few good moments sprinkled throughout, though. For starters, the reason I was in Vegas was to attend my sister’s wedding. Her name is Carrie. Her husband’s name is Kerry. Yes, it gets confusing when you are addressing them verbally. The wedding itself was on Saturday, so lets take a step back to Friday. Sorry if I bitch a little bit. :o)

The day started off well enough. My friend drove me to the airport, and that ended up being the highlight of the day. I haven’t flown since the whole “no liquids” thing went into effect, so, yes, I tried to bring all my toiletry items in my carry on. The guy was nice and let me run back and check the bag, though, but, on the way back, I was stopped for the random screening. The flight went better than I thought, and, surprisingly, my iPod w/ video playback actually lasted nearly the entire flight! It was nice to be able to catch up on Grey’s Anatomy and some other shows I’ve missed this past week. Then I got to Vegas. I always thought that DFW was bad when it came to luggage, but Vegas was just plain horrible. In Vegas’ defense, unlike in Dallas, baggage claim isn’t too close to where the planes are. All in all, it took over thirty minutes for the baggage to start coming out, and another 15 before mine found its way into my hands. At my mother’s suggestion, I decided to take a shuttle to the hotel (Imperial Palace). Bad decision. I sat in the freeeeeezing van for another 45 minutes before the driver decided it was time to leave. I never left the van cause he kept coming back in every five minutes and sitting down as though we were about to leave. But I digress.

My sister asked me to join her and some friends for drinks that evening, which I really needed considering I had just spent an entire day w/ my mother. However, they ended up just gambling. This would have been fine if I had money to throw away. Or if I liked to gamble. I spent the majority of the time out trying to track them down, as they were casino hopping. I eventually gave up and called it a night. Besides, I wanted to be well rested, as, on Saturday morning, I would be seeing my biological father for the first time in nearly 8 years. Which leads me to Saturday…

We wake up early to get ready for the big breakfast (The bride and groom treated everyone to breakfast prior to the wedding since they wanted to hit the casinos and other stuff - you know what, I don’t have to write it). I should let you know that I was sharing a room w/ my mother and aunt. Big mistake, but saved me a few hundred that I don’t have. So they spend over an hour each preparing for the day and leave me w/ less than thirty. As I was rushing to get ready, my mother wanted to leave telling me that I could just get a cab on my own. So nice. I managed to finish just in time, though.

At breakfast, I saw my father. I shook his hand and he immediately started asking questions about my life so he could get caught up. His wife, whom I despise, tried to come in for a hug. I deflected it and she had to settle for patting me on my arm. It may sound harsh, but these are people that have told me they don’t approve of my life, why should I go out of my way to be anything more than civil w/ them? It wasn’t really as awkward as I imagined it would be. While I did answer their questions, I did not ask any or offer additional dialogue w/ them. They seemed to get the hint that I wasn’t comfortable and began mingling w/ the other guests. I, too, would have mingled, but I think I had been stressing over the impending reunion far more than I convinced myself I was. A headache sprouted and was shortly followed by nausea. I took some Advil and felt a little better. On the way back from breakfast, I got sick to my stomach again. Our female cab driver was a total racist. My mother was recapping our disastrous cab ride around the city the previous day, and the cab driver, assuming the driver was black, said that was quite typical of those Ethiopian n******. Had we time to spare; this is the point where I would have requested she pull over and let me out. I simply do not approve of that type of language, at least not when used in that context. What upset me even more is that the rest of my family continued talking to her and telling her that they wished she could drive us to the ceremony if only they had not rented a car. Then, to top it off, when trying to get into the drop off zone at our hotel a woman let us in, our drive smiled, waved and, talking to herself but out loud, said, “how very white of you…even though you ain’t white!” I did jump out of the car at this point, but we were already at the hotel. Thankfully, I ended up not feeling sick by the time of the wedding.

Hitched

She finally managed to sucker some guy into marrying her. The ceremony just finished. But I will post pictures and video probably Monday evening...I don't have internet connection here in Vegas, so I'm posting via my phone at the moment.

Not Ready To Make Nice

Saturday is my sister's wedding. While I'm anxious for that, I am not too thrilled to be in the same room as my biological father and his wife. I have not seen either of them since Christmas of '98.

As the big day has been rapidly approaching, I have been debating how I should handle our inevitable reunion. Should I hug him, shake his hand or do neither? I'm actually not worrying about that now, as I've already decided I'll probably just shake his hand. I'm not too happy w/ him and his wife now, as they have stirred up some drama.

My step-mother likes to cause trouble. She's a pig-nosed little witch (replace the w w/ a b). Anyway, she informed my father that he would be walking my sister down the aisle, but, when it came to actually giving her away, our step-father would also be there to answer "we do". According to Nancy (my step-mother), my father was not too please to hear this, so she e-mailed my sister telling her that she needed to reconsider the whole thing so as not to ruin it for my father and to keep him from making a scene. So she's not only trying to control the wedding, she's also doing it through threats. She'd rather see it ruined than happen any other way but her own.

My sister let her know that she would not be changing her plans and that reminded them that this was her wedding and she would call all the shots. To my knowledge, they have yet to respond. So, I may not even have to encounter them this weekend. Which, while nice for me, would put a damper on my sister's big day.

This is a perfect example of why I choose not to have my father and his wife in my life.

Anyway....I will try to post something if I can get an internet connection while in Vegas this weekend.

Life With Zadie

Zadie, my new puppy, has been adjusting to her new life here in Dallas; which means that I have had very little time to devote to my blog or sleep. Due to her being weened from her mother at least four weeks too early, I have to make sure she is fed every three hours and keep her away from other animals. No, I'm not complaining, because it is soooo worth being exhausted. She is the cutest, sweetest thing EVER! My opinion may be a little biased.

Okay, I'm off to continue bonding w/ Zadie. This Friday I head to Vegas for my sister's wedding, so I probably won't be posting again until next week.

Take care!

Beware Of The Dog

Okay, so I was fooled...but my initial guess was right. My friend did surprise me w/ the puppy! It only took a couple months...which, since the one I have now is only one month old, means that I didn't get the one I was initially going to get. She's a chihuahua. I had to compromise on the name, though. I was set on one, and my friend wanted to name her for me. I made the name he chose her middle name. Here's Zadie Lola (the Zadie is for my favourite author...Zadie Smith):

On Pins And Needles

I hate being held in suspense! My friend just called and told me that he needs to show me something, but that it has to wait until this evening. He won't even give me a hint as to what it is. So today will be spent wondering what the hell he's going to show me.

The only thing that I can even think of is a dog. His mother is supposed to be coming up some time this week and she may be bringing a chihuahua for me (since she raises them in Mexico). Since he says that he hasn't heard from his mother about if she is still coming up or not, I'm pretty much eliminating that.

I can't possibly think of something so important that he would need to drive 30 minutes out of his way to show me before I possibly head over to Adam's house for our Project Runway Wednesdays. That is why the dog is still a possibility. Especially since he mentioned a few days ago that his father was supposed to come in for a visit (separate from his mother's), as well, and he could have brought the dog up. Eh, wishful thinking perhaps.

UPDATE: Well, it isn't the dog. :( He just wants to show me his portfolio. I knew this, but assumed it was something else since we had made arrangements to review it tomorrow evening. He called today and was being all secretive and made it out like this was something really important and a surprise. I got all excited for nothing! Well, not nothing, as I'm sure the portfolio will be great, but still...

Put Your Records On 06.08

There's a previously unreleased Madonna that is starting to circulate, so I thought I would share it w/ you here. It's from her Confessions... sessions and will be included as a b-side on the upcoming Jump single. It may not be her best track, but it's fairly decent. Also, this is not the full length version. That one apparently approaches the six minute mark. This is a "clip", but the quality is great and it plays more like an edit.

How Could I Say No?

I logged into MySpace and saw that I had the following new message:

"well i'm looking for my perfect man or boyfriedn you seem like a nice guy well i'm curently in college i would love to know you more well my parents want to kick me out of the house cuz i'm gay i can't go to my family cuz they are agaisnts it too i need someone who could support me or be there for me as my man that's why i need a boyfriend you seem like you could be a nice guy hope to hear from you"

He's in college? I hope English isn't his major. My grammar isn't flawless, but I'm amazed that this actually passes nowadays. I don't know about you, but I like to know where sentences end and begin.

I should also note that I do not know this person. He is not on my friends list and this is the very first message that I have ever received from him. Hopefully it will be the first of many more!

Ah, MySpace. An endless source of entertainment.

LifeWalk 2006

I'm happy to report that this year's AIDS Walk was a very successful one. The Gayborhoodies managed to not only exceed our initial goal of $1000, but we also surpassed our second goal of $2000. We raised a whopping $2345 total. I want to thank each of you that helped Adam, Brad and me in our efforts and for supporting such a worthy cause as AIDS Arms. It's been a truly amazing experience...one that we'll hopefully repeat next year.
