Just Plain Ugly Betty

Three episodes into this series and I can't tell any of them apart. It's the same basic plot every time: Betty's boss (the editor-in-chief of a successful fashion magazine and son of the owner) is trying to prove himself, Betty is ridiculed by her co-workers because she is ugly, Betty eventually screws something up, both her and her boss fear they are going to lose their jobs, Vanessa Williams' character tries to see to it that they lose their jobs and then Betty and boss make a last minute recovery to save the latest issue. The first episode was cute (despite playing like a watered down version of the far superior summer smash The Devil Wears Prada), but the second and third episodes have not shown much promise. For some reason, though, I really want this show to succeed. I just haven't determined why.

Has anyone else been watching this? What do you think?

I've heard all about it but have yet to catch an episode. I have to soon.

You did hear that they're turning The Devil Wears Prada into a sitcom, right?

I actually think the show is cute... just like most shows on television, you can see what is going to happen each week from a mile away, but this one is a cute mile away... just brainless entertainment, and by 8pmm on Thursday, I need as little brain function as possible... hehe

in reference to the 'TDWP' sitcom - why can't they just leave well enough alone? meryl streep is miranda, nobody else can play her.

and kelly, i agree, the show is cute despite being predictable. i probably would enjoy it if i could watch it when it comes on, because i want brainless entertainment after a long day at work. however, i typically download it and watch it on the weekend. i'm going to stick with it for now, but if it continues being the same thing every episode, there is only so much longer i can watch.

it's a direct rip-off (or, i guess, i should say legal copy) of the latin american telenovella "betty la fea." even the lead's costume is the same as in the latin version. i haven't seen this, but i'm guessing they just updated some of the jokes for American audiences (and because we tend not to like dubbed things). but, anyway, since it was a telenovella, it was originally a sprawling, somewhat redudant story. i guess they didn't change that when they changed the market. incidently, there are re-taped latin versions of The Nanny and Married with Children. i think those worked out better than importing Betty La Fea.
