Over a year-and-a-half ago, I posted a review of new artist Grenouille's few songs that had been posted to his MySpace page. I had nothing but praise for him at the time, and it's no different today. In fact, he is getting extra points for offering up his debut album, Shadows Of The Lagoon, for free.

I love of Montreal, so I thought I'd share the love with you guys. Their latest album, Skeletal Lamping, features some brilliant work, including the gem Plastis Wafers. The song is over seven minutes long, but I've always thought that the first two minutes and forty seconds would make for a great single. So I was playing around in GarageBand and decided to create an edit for myself. Then I thought I'd share it with you guys. And what a nice welcome back gift, I think:

It's the last day of one amazing year...at least musically speaking. Sure, record sales and the economy are down, but digital single downloads have never been higher. Reflecting on 2007, I think I appreciated the albums far more than I did the songs. This year, it's just the opposite. A Waltz To Remember

In reflecting on this past year's films, it comes down to two films that had the most impact on me. One is my favourite, the other, in my opinion, the best film of the year.

Vicky Christina Barcelona

The latest Woody Allen movie is the favourite for many reasons. For starters, it's hilarious. I don't think I was expecting it to be quite so funny when I first ventured out to see it, but was pleasantly surprised by just how enjoyable it was. So much so I returned the following weekend to see it again...alone. Surprisingly, the only other film that I had watched alone at a theatre was another Woody Allen film, 'Match Point'. Secondly, the acting was flawless. During the first viewing, I was in love with Rachel Hall's performance. The second go round, I sat up and took notice of Penelope Cruz's brilliant performance. If it weren't for Viola Davis in 'Doubt', Penelope would be the front-runner for the Supporting Actress Oscar. In my opinion, at least. Finally, I related well to one of the characters in many ways, especially their philosophy on love. Oh, and it's one of those rare movies I not only can watch over and over, but that I actually want to watch again and again.

Waltz With Bashir

The BEST film of the year. It's the story of a man on a journey to reclaim his memories of the 1982 invasion of Lebanon by having former comrades tell stories they'd most likely wish they didn't remember. The beautiful animation distracts you from the fact that you're actually watching a documentary all the way up until the brutal, haunting final images. It had such an impact on the entire audience that not one person stirred until it was well into the credits. The film is riveting, engaging and one of the most beautiful films that I've ever seen. On a side note, Max Richter's score is breathtaking. Hopefully it will be nominated for an Oscar since the film itself has been shut out of the Documentary category due to a lame technicality.

So it's the end of the year. A wonderful year, indeed. Aside from moving to NYC and getting a new job, the year was full of amazing concerts and brilliant music. I know I haven't been around. Now that I will be traveling for work with greater frequency beginning next month, the chances of me being around here more are low. I considered giving the blog up, but I can't bring myself to do so. Instead, I think I may stick to either a weekly or bi-weekly format. What are your thoughts?

As is the now annual tradition, below are my most played songs from the past year according to Last.fm. As per usual, the number coincides with my birthday since I usually post it on my birthday. That didn't happen this year, but I'm still sticking with the trend.

In regards to the tracks, I don't completely agree with the rankings. There were periods of time that I didn't have internet connection and other times where tracks had more plays scrobbled than should have been. One notable track missing is I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked by Ida Maria. I know that I played it more often than Kiss With A Fist, but there was always an issue that prevented it from being scrobbled. But I digress. Here's the list as is.

Fight The H8

I wasn't sure if I would ever return to the world of blogging, but today's protest against Prop 8 compelled me to make at least one new entry. I can't even begin to put into words just how moved by today's events I was. Way more than five thousand people crowded around City Hall in downtown Manhattan (covering, at the very least, five city blocks) to show support for equal rights for everyone. There were so many people (myself included) that were nearly brought to tears several times throughout the rally. Below are a few random shots of the crowd:

All The Calories They Eat

I know I've been away from the blog for a while...and I'm actually considering taking a break for a little while longer. Right now it just seems like a chore when I post, and something like this shouldn't. That just tells me that my heart just isn't in it right now. But I've hit a bit of a rough patch here lately, dealing with being a little bit homesick (just missing my friends back in Texas a bit). I expect to be back up and running after my visit back "home" this time next month.

All that aside, though, I just stumbled across a great emerging artist. She's a Brit and, at least with the song I'm posting, sounds very ABBA-esque. Of course, I'm not the biggest ABBA fan, so I may be way off on that comparison. Judge for yourself, though. The singer is Marina And The Diamonds (despite the name, it's just her) and the song is Girls Girls Girls.

Like I Birthed You From Some Greasy Crevice On My Underside

I know that I have been absent for a couple weeks, but here come the excuses! Work has been busier and more draining than usual. My mother was in town for a few days. My laptop is nearing the end of its run and has essentially become a desktop. And my dog at my homework. But now I'm back...somewhat. Unfortunately, I am traveling for work and do not have access to my extensive collection of music; therefore, I am unable to post newer music. As a result, I'll be taking the NBC route and presenting a "it's new to you" song from a band that I've previously posted about here.

The Tom Fun Orchestra is, apparently, "the world's premier Vaudevillian Cluster Rock ensemble featuring an ambitious mix of electric and acoustic instruments and enough skilled musicians on stage to intimidate even the largest crowds." In other words, think of them as Canada's answer to Gogol Bordello...only without the accent. I posted their most accessible song, Watchmaker, back a while ago. After I wore that song out, the band's other songs became lost in the immense number of new songs that have been coming my way. The other day, though, I felt compelled to revisit their music and was reminded of just how interesting their work is. That's why I'm posting their song When You Were Mine. It may take a few listens, so give it a chance.

I Will Listen To Your Every Word

I'm a big fan of free stuff, but an even bigger fan of free music. It is a safe assumption that if you're here, then you probably are, too. Which is why I'm happy to let you in on not only some free tunes, but what I consider to be some really fantastic songs. I'd definitely pay for them if it weren't already available for no charge. Richard Swift creates some gorgeous tunes with only a four-track recorder and a computer. His new EP, Ground Trouble Jar, sounds straight out of the 60s or 70s and feature some beautiful vocals. Some People Want To Do Crazy Things

So I have three new obsessions that just started this week. The first is, if you know me at all, quite shocking due to my lifelong dislike of fruit. I was roaming the LES over the weekend and felt compelled to try out Liquiteria. As I was studying the menu, one of the guys behind the bar asked if I wanted a sample. It was taken with much hesitancy because the Green Monster (which, contrary to what the name suggests, is not actually green) contains my most hated of all fruits...strawberry (you'll also find blueberries and bananas in there). To my delight, the mixture was sweet and delicious. Now I find myself scurrying over there at least once a day...out of the way (and rather pricey - a little more than $6 for my drink alone) as it may be.

This second one comes as a shock for me. I generally don't do too much reading, aside from the occasional magazine. In fact, the only time I have ever truly been captivated by a novel is when I was reading The Fountainhead in high school and, in the past decade since, any of the three works of the brilliant Zadie Smith. But since I've moved to NYC, I've felt as though I could be doing so much more than just listening to music and people watching whenever I'm riding the subway. So I picked up The Road, the Pulitzer Prize winning novel from Cormac McCarthy. I wound up finishing the novel in a day, due partly to the larger than normal font. But that left me hungry for more, so I rushed out and picked up The Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier And Clay, which is a book I've actually been wanting to read since it hit shelves in 2000. Now I'm completely wrapped up in it. So much so that it's actually inspired me to pick up my pencil and start drawing again. How long that'll last is anyone's guess.

And, naturally, my third obsession is some new music. Actually, the song I'm posting isn't necessarily my obsession, as it's really the entire new bundle I snatched up yesterday that is. This one just happens to be a fun, summery song that just helped put me back into a good mood. It's called Good Times and it's from Brazilian Girls, an NYC-based group. Their new album, New York City dropped earlier this week.

One of my new favourite songs is I Wish I Could Keep You by New Zealand-based duo Little Pictures. It's a cute, pop-y song, plus, it makes me think about someone I know. Their debut album, owl + owl, is out now and may be ordered via Lil' Chief Records.

I Stood By It Until It's Last Sigh

The musical talent runs in the family, at least in the case of The Barbers. Last month I reported on Matthew Barber, but now it's his sister's turn. Jill Barber has delivered a saccharine sweet album all about love. Where her brother puts a pop twist on folk, she takes a decidedly country route. Dare I say I may just be more impressed with her body of work...enjoy Hard Line, a track from the album For All Time. Now, mind you, this album was actually released in Canada all the way back in 2006, but it's just now finding its way outside of that market. It's a good thing.

Pitchfork has just made me the happiest guy alive! They've debuted the first single, Id Engager, from Of Montreal's upcoming album Skeletal Lamping! This is something that I've been eagerly anticipating since first listening to their previous effort, the amazing Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer, just under two years ago.

A few weeks ago, I stumbled across another track from the album, Feminine Effects. While I absolutely love it, Id Engager, while kind of lacking a hook, is far more, well, engaging. It's also more along the lines of what they had to offer on Hissing Fauna..., although I've read that the rest may be more of a departure than this. If you enjoyed the previous album (most of my readers back then thought was far too funky) then you'll definitely love this single.

Leave Me Nothing I Don't Need At All

Johnny Flynn's debut, A Larum, hit US stores this week. The lead single, The Box, had caught my attention a while back. However, it failed to sustain it for very long before other music I was discovering back then hit my ears. It was a great song, and one that, after a few revisits, am finally beginning to truly appreciate it. And now he is heading across the states along with a favourite artist of mine, Laura Marling. I've missed her the past couple times she has come through town, but hopefully that will not be the case this time. Normally I wouldn't find the idea of an abusive relationship so fun, especially considering one of my dearest friends was in such a bind at one time; However, Florence And The Machine have made such a delectably catchy song out of a couple that beat each other up that I've been forced to make an exception. And yes, the band has stated that this isn't about domestic violence, but rather about a couple pushing each other to psychological extremes and how relationships can be completely destructive. The lyrics make it a little difficult to believe that, but you decide for yourself. Regardless of what the song is about, it's hard not to want to dance and sing along to it.

Some very sad news today - Estelle Getty has passed away. Best known for her performance as the cranky yet lovable Sophia on a total of three different (but related) sitcoms, the long running Golden Girls and two of its spin-offs, Empty Nest and the short lived Golden Palace.

Getty has been suffering from Lewy Body dementia for a long time and was forced to stop making public appearances back in 2000. What's odd is that I was just thinking about this last night, so it's an sad coincidence that it actually occurred the following day.

She touched millions of hearts and will be missed by each of them.

Must like last week, I found myself back in Central Park for yet another free concert (thanks to SummerStage). Unlike last week, I actually started off in the correct line. The show was fantastic! The headliner was Santogold, but the brilliant DJ Diplo, another DJ and some rappers all performed prior to her storming the stage. Below is the first video from the concert that I've been able to upload (it's a slow process when you're internet connection isn't reliable). All This Pain I've Tried To Hide

A couple weeks ago I was listening to some of my favourite songs from a couple years back. This included a few tracks from Red Book, a particularly strong pop album from the Glasgow band Texas. I've been a fan since the nineties, so it got me wondering when they would be putting out a new album since a couple years had passed. I put on checking because I've been particularly lazy as of late. Imagine my delight when, a few days later, I stumbled across a familiar name on a site I visit frequently. It started bugging me, so I looked it up. Turns out it's the lead singer, Sharleen Spiteri, and her solo debut hit stores yesterday. The first single, All The Times I Cried, is indistinguishable from her work with Texas, but that isn't a bad thing by any means. She's knows what her fans like and uses it to make the transition easier. Of course, the rest of the album, Melody, isn't much different either, it just has more of a retro-pop vibe.

Central Park Summer Stage LAMC

Yesterday Summer Stage hosted a concert in Central Park with performers Julieta Venegas, Plastilina Mosh and DJ Bitman. Unfortunately for me (at least at first, Bon Jovi was also performing in the park. No, I didn't want see that band, but I ended up standing in line to see him for two hours because where I entered the line (after walking south five blocks just to get to the end of it) there was no information about who was performing, just that it was for a concert. Thankfully by the time we moved up six blocks there were people standing around directing people to the concert I was there for. Of course, that meant standing in yet another long line when I could have already been in the venue. I was pissed but quickly got over it once the show started up. DJ Bitman got the crowd warmed up. From what I heard yesterday, his style reminded me of the band Avalanche (if they were to add the occasional rap in, that is).

Bitman was followed by Plastilina Mosh and their mix of dance, rap and rock. They started off very strong and got the crowd dancing and jumping around. They hit a lull toward the latter half of the middle when they started experimenting a little, but then kicked it back into high gear as they wrapped up their set. See video below:

After a slew of ten minutes more, Julieta Venegas took the stage and had the crowd roaring. She was pretty amazing, but I'll let the video footage do the talking. Oh, and I know the video is really shaky, but keep in mind that at this point I had been standing for five or six hours and had to deal with people pushing their way through the already crammed together crowd. And it's just my digital camera, so no steady cam.

Careless In Our Summer Clothes

As I've previously mentioned, this past Friday I went to Celebrate Brooklyn, a free concert in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. The performers were locals Sam Champion and Elvis Perkins In Dearland, with not-so-local headliner Cold War Kids. Champion and Perkins were both great, but, as expected, Cold War Kids put on a phenomenal performance. With this band, you either like them or hate them, no real in between. At least in regards to their work in the studio. Their live performances are a whole other thing. Granted, most people were showing up because they are fans, but there were also a lot of folks checking them out for the first time...but everyone was really enjoying their set. As of right now, I have only been able too upload one video (performing 'Hang Me Up To Dry') since it took much longer than expected to load. I'll post the others once I've been able to get those up on YouTube.

Canadian singer-songwriter Matthew Barber has already scored a number one hit in his homeland and I think it's about time he conquer America. Okay, very slim chance of that happening with the current tastes of most Americans. Given the opportunity (which isn't likely, either), he could very well storm the adult contemporary charts. While his lyrics are simple and a tad trite, he somehow makes it work. If you're anything like me, you'll find yourself putting him on repeat.

So it's Pride today and I should have been having a fantastic time. While I did have some fun prior to all the rain, it pretty much spiraled downward quickly. One of my favourite bands, Cold War Kids, is putting on a free show this Friday as part of Celebrate Brooklyn. Other artists performing will be Elvis Perkins In Dearland and Sam Champion. The show will be at the Prospect Park Bandshell and starts at 7:00 p.m. I'll be there and so should you!

For those in NYC, take the F train to 7th Avenue. Exit at the front of the Brooklyn-bound train leaves you at 8th Avenue and 9 Street. Walk 1 block to park's 9th Street Entrance.

A Hundred Millions Ways To Break A Heart

I'm making a conscious effort to bring more male artists into the fold. For a while there my playlist consisted of female singers and female-fronted bands, so that was reflected on my blog. But now that I'm finding worthy songs from male artists, I need to start posting here.

One such artist is Benji Hughes. It's hard to pin him down, but he's kind of a mixture of Beck and The Eels. The tracks are a bit lighter and fun, though. And he definitely doesn't look anything like I thought he would. The song I have here is called You Stood Me Up, and it's about exactly what you'd think. He gets stood up by a girl. It's a really great track that's a nice summer vibe. Enjoy!

Best.Concert.EVER

Last night I saw The Ting Tings at Southpaw in Brooklyn, and it was hands down the best concert I've been to. Okay, so I may be a little biased considering they are my favourite band, but there is a reason that it was sold out last night. Their set list played out like a greatest hits set would for a band that's been around much longer. Each song had the entire club dancing, jumping about and singing. Yes, just about everyone there seemed about as in love with The Ting Tings as me.

Katie White (pictured) and Jules De Martino infused so much energy and fun into their performance that it didn't really matter that some of us had waited nearly three hours to hear 10 songs. Thankfully, I was one of those few that was there early, which got me a spot front and center at that stage. Little did I know that by the end of the night I would have White's crotch in my face on multiple occasions. She was constantly jumping over the equipment and getting right at the edge of the stage...her favourite spot being directly in front of me. Had I known that I was able to bring my camera, I would have been able to get close ups of her pores. I will say this, she's become far more greater presence on stage than some of the early footage I've seen. Meanwhile, Jules De Martino (who I must say I have a slight crush on) was pretty much confined to his drums, but he was equally energetic. I just wish he would take his sunglasses off for once.

Oh, and lest I forget, their opening act, Anni Rossi, was amazing. She did wonders with just her voice, a violin and a suitcase. Definitely check her out.

So I told you that I would be back, and here I am. A little later than I said, but better late than never...right? I swore to myself that I was going to avoid posting songs by female artists (or groups w/ a female on vocals) because this blog has way too much estrogen for its own good. I know I'm gay and all, but still. well, my best friend informed me that one of my favourite Mexican singers was back with some new material and I just couldn't resist posting here since I've fallen in love w/ the song. You don't have to know Spanish, this song is addictive regardless of what language(s) you understand. The artist is Julieta Venegas and the song is Gol. It was originally done by Anita Tijoux (she actually is featured on this version, as well), but Venegas got a hold of it and put her twist on it.

Prospect(ive) Park

Since moving to NYC about a month ago, I've discovered that I'm far more popular with the men here than back in Texas. Maybe they smell fresh meat. Or it could just be that I feel more comfortable here than I have elsewhere. Or maybe there's just something in the water that impacts their judgment. Whatever it is, I'm enjoying the attention. There's been a drought for the past two and a half years, so all the attention is really rather refreshing. A little strange for me, though, since I'm not used to it yet.

That being said, I went on my first date since this past Friday. It was with an attractive fellow that I had bumped into the previous weekend. We enjoyed a movie (The Strangers), followed by coffee. While we have a second date lined up for Friday, I'm not holding my breath. It isn't that I'm necessarily being pessimistic, it's just that there hasn't been a second date in the past three years. If it happens, it happens. At this point, I'm really just focused on having some fun, not necessarily looking for a boyfriend. Not that I'm opposed to that either.

Speaking of having fun, I actually have another date this weekend w/ another very recent transplant from Texas. Well, it's kind of a date. We're both really attracted to each other, but are trying to approach this first as friends. That's why we are doing non-typical date activities, such as shopping for window a/c units. He'll also be meeting my friends and me out in Prospect Park for Brooklyn Pride that night.

So yeah, I'm really loving NYC. It's just amazing to finally feel at home somewhere.

I have good news for anyone that has been waiting for me to return to this here blog: I'M BACK!

I'll understand if you have your doubts, as I've said this before in the past month. This time it's true, though. Since I am only home roughly two days out of the week, I have been trying to simultaneously get settled in my new flat and go out exploring my new home. Naturally, the blog suffered as a result. But never fear, I am back in nearly full mode. Unfortunately, the site I use to store all the music I pay here has canceled my subscription because of an issue with Paypal, so I'm going to spend my free time this week searching for another site. So while I'll be updating, new music will most likely not hit the site until this weekend.

I've been singing the praises of The Ting Tings for just under a year now, ever since I first heard their single That's Not My Name. Their debut album, We Started Nothing was finally released last week and I can honestly say that it is truly one of the best albums I've heard in a long while. There are at least three songs (the aforementioned 'That's Not My Name', plus 'Great DJ' and 'Fruit Machine') that I've had on heavy rotation for six months now, and their latest (which nabbed a coveted iPod commercial) 'Shut Up And Let Me Go' is just as catchy. What am I getting at? This punk-dance duo from England know how to make pop music that is addictive, guilt-free and long-lasting. We Started Nothing has easily secured its position as best album of the year, at least in my book. And yes, I can say that even if we are only at the half-way mark.

On a side note, I should be back to posting new music (and there is plenty I can't wait to share with you) starting either Thursday night or Friday morning. I know I said that I would be posting this weekend, but I was still trying to get settled in my apartment and had a lot going on. Besides, I have a long train ride awaiting me Friday morning, so I'll have plenty of time on my hands.

Okay, I'm freaking out! This has been an overall great day. For starters, I finally secured an apartment in NYC. Then iTunes has The Ting Tings up for grabs for free (for which I made the comment that all they need now is an iPod commercial to get them the mainstream exposure they so rightly deserve), then I found out that I should receive an offer on a new job tomorrow and now I've just learned that the aforementioned The Ting Tings actually have an iPod commercial AND a new song. It's called Shut Up And Let Me Go. Oh, and their highly anticipated (and not just by me) debut LP, We Started Nothing drops on May 20th. I don't think I could take any more good news...check out the new iPod commercial below...

I'm spending my Friday night attempting to make sense of my rushed packing from my previous move. I don't think that I realized just how daunting a task condensing everything I currently own into one car load. Yep, I've gone from a huge 960 sq ft. apartment to a nice sized spare bedroom to a Ford Focus. One good thing is really coming out of this task, though, I'm coming across music in my collection that I may have tossed to the side after only one listen or had overlooked entirely.

I've had Beat (Health, Life And Fire) by Thao Nguyen with Get Down Stay Down on heavy rotation for the past few months and felt it was time to revisit their album for something fresh. And while today there seems to be a new female singer-songwriter along the same lines as her, she manages to stand out despite there not being too much to help distinguish her from the pack. Aside from the album, We Brave Stings And All being a solid effort and the subtle sense of rawness. Okay, I'm kind of getting off of my point...which is that I'm in love with a new track, Bag Of Hammers. In it she asks her lover not to leave, but to stay so they can rebuild their relationship. At least that's what I take away from it. Whatever it is about, it's has a great beat and chorus. Makes me want to get up and dance...if only I could.

For a change, I've actually been quite busy and productive at work. Between Our Love And Hate

It's taken 15 years or so for their return, but The Breeders have made it well worth the wait. In all honesty, the only song of their that I'm at all familiar with prior to this new collection is Cannonball, so I can't say whether or not this new album, Mountain Battles, is truly some of their strongest work. From a relative newbie, I'm really enjoying it. It's raw, yet refined. While not as popish or contagious as Cannonball was, overall, it has the same feel throughout. Look for the album to drop on April 8, 2008 in the US market. But to whet your appetite and tide you over until then, here's one of the tracks from the album. It's call It's The Love

Sia Later

Last night I saw Sia in concert. It has been many months since my last one, so I wanted to make sure that it was going to be a good one. And it was. It was also the last leg of their North American tour, so the atmosphere was relaxed and you could tell that everyone had really had fun together.

I had my doubts about the opening act, though. The last time I saw Har Mar Superstar was about seven years ago and his performance was less than stellar. The only images that I retained were of him in nothing but his undies and a cape running around the stage. Maybe I just didn't get it back then or maybe he's really improved. Either way, he was fucking awesome last night. At one point he jumped off the stage and ventured over to one of the bars. I was returning from the restroom and nearly ran into him. Thank GOD I didn't, that man was dripping with sweat. Funny to watch, not to touch. I managed to get some video of him before being told to turn off the video (which takes place when the camera is lowered)

He's a riot and definitely got the crowd going and pumped for Sia. Let me just say, her voice is stunning. What you see is this goofy, child-like girl playing around on stage and then she starts to sing with this unexpected force. Deep, rich and divine.

I managed to record several songs; unfortunately, not all of them turned out to be visually appealing. Because I was sneaking video, I had to be very discreet. That meant I wasn't always able to watch what I was filming. While the audio was brilliant (I love my camera if only for that nice feature), I'm refraining from posting the videos where the camera takes a liking to the back of some lady's head and then the lights above. haha. Two videos were presentable. The first I'm displaying is her encore. It's a Zero 7 song whose name I am unaware of. If you know it, please share with me.

And now for the song she is most famous for. It appeared over the final moments of HBO's Six Feet Under and opened the door to millions of new fans. It's a beautiful, touching song called Breathe Me:

I love Dolly Parton! And really, who doesn't? Who couldn't? She one of the most genuine celebrities alive, as she hasn't let the fame go to her head...she's let them go to her breasts. But behind those breasts is pure talent and a spirit that keeps us coming back for more. After spending the past few albums devoted to bluegrass and gospel, she's made a welcome return to mainstream country. Her new set, Backwoods Barbie, proves once again her tremendous knack for storytelling and songwriting. Another Hand Upon You

While still in high school, Missy Higgins garnered national attention in Australia when she won a demo contest held by Triple J, a youth-oriented radio outlet. Three years later in 2004, she proved why she had won by nabbing five ARIA Awards with her debut album, The Sound Of White. With a track record like that, it was a no-brainer to expect her sophomore effort, On A Clear Night, to be just as brilliant when it was released in May last year. With the follow up, she decided to make the leap into the fickle US market. And while she hasn't completely blown up here just yet, she's been steadily garnering acclaim, buzz and fans stateside.

As for her style, it's a mix of folk, pop and alt-country. It's what Sarah McLachlan would sound like if she went country. In fact, her single Where I Stood starts of decidedly McLachlan-esque with that slightly raspy voice over a building piano before a more country influence kicks in for the chorus.

If you have a MySpace, then you’ve most likely been bombarded with friend requests from the likes of authors, comedians, musicians and spammers. Thankfully, nowadays they have a better filtering system than they did when I joined nearly five years ago (has it really been that long…wow). I only recently created an account specifically for the blog, but I’ve received a few requests that have just had me puzzled. I hate to trash anyone here (okay, no I don’t), but some of the musicians’ work have been pure rubbish. It’s curious to see what some people consider art or listenable. Because the track record with these blind friend requests from bands have failed to introduce me to anyone remotely talented, I haven’t always used MySpace as a place for scouting fresh talent. Of course, today proved to be different.

The only thing I really know about this guy is his name (or at least what he goes by), Grenouille. And that he’s from Spain and, from as far as I am able to tell, unsigned. While the four songs that he has posted (which are currently available for download for FREE on his MySpace page, hurry before he realizes) are all brilliant and enjoyable, the song City Of Sirens stands out from the pack. It starts out with just him and guitar but the horns and strings start emerging about a minute into it and slowly envelope his vocals. It all builds up to the brilliant, dramatic and fierce piano finale. Well, it’s probably not actually piano, but I’m not an instrument geek. The whole thing is very European (French, really) sounding, so there are probably more instruments in play than I would guess. Regardless, it’s sublime. Take a listen for yourself:

I'm running on fumes today after only a couple hours of sleep. That said, I don't feel up to writing much today; therefore, I'm gonna let Last.fm do it for me:

Tilly And The Wall sprang out of Omaha, NE - a Midwestern band of like-minded friends with pockets full of melodies, and a lot of pockets. The serendipitous result of five Omaha residents with a penchant for the same classic '60s pop, boy/girl harmonies and Americana folk records, Tilly and the Wall celebrates the petulant, determined, feisty nature of youth. They rejoice in tales of dreams followed, mistakes made, and hearts broken.

They are currently blowing up all over the blogosphere with their latest offering Beat Control. What surprises me is that it will not be included on their upcoming album. Fortunately, as of yesterday, it's been made available as an EP on iTunes. Use the links provided below to go download it.

I Thought It Was Over

So tonight I participated in my first ever caucus. Or at least I partially participated. Prior to heading over to it earlier this evening, I asked friends and co-workers just what the process was. Unfortunately, not one of them was really aware either, as they too had never participated in one before now. Considering the dozen plus people that I know have no clue what to do, I incorrectly made the assumption that they would go over it at the actual caucus. Here's what happened at mine:

Three precincts (hundreds of voters per) packed themselves into the cafeteria of a high school. Despite being a little crowded everyone was in great spirits, on a high from voting in a very important primary. Around 7:20 p.m. a man comes in and starts talking. Between everyone chatting amongst themselves and the surprisingly noisy air conditioning, nobody could hear the poor sap since he was lacking a microphone. Now, I may not have been able to hear him, but I know he wasn't explaining what was about to go down. He was just repeating same phrase until everyone quieted down and heard him:

"Obama to the left and Clinton to the right"

Pandemonium ensued. Everyone was rushing to get in line, jumping over lunch tables and cutting in line. There were only three or four of us that actually caught the mistake initially. The moron (he really was) was mixed up. He had been facing all of us with the tables behind him, so he actually meant that Obama was HIS left (but our right) and Clinton was HIS right. More bitching, moaning and chaos followed his correction.

All we were told to do was fill out the paperwork and to be sure we wrote the name of the candidate that we were voting for. I watched every person before me and each one LEFT THE BUILDING afterward. Not once did any of the volunteers ever mention to them that they weren't done yet and that they should stick around. In fact, everyone was rushing out thinking that they had done their part. Honestly, the organizers seemed more confused about what was going on than we did.

It wasn't until my roommate came home over three hours after I got home (I was home by 7:45) that I found out I had missed out on so much more. To say the least, I'm a little ticked off that I didn't get to participate in the entire process. I understand that voter turn out was far more than they had planned for, but that's not a good enough excuse in my book. Although it is comforting to know that I wasn't the only one confused. They really dropped the ball here in Texas (just another reason I can't wait move...lol)

Of course, when all is said and done, Clinton ruled the night as far as the primaries go. Obama seems to be leading in the caucuses.

Ximena Sariñana is a twenty year-old actress and singer-songwriter from Mexico. Both of her parents are in the film industry down there, so it’s in her blood. She may have dipped her feet in the music industry back at the ripe young age of eight (singing the theme song to the telenovela Luz Clarita), but she took the plunge later joining the band Feliz No Cumpleaños.

While her band was known for their funk-jazz style, her solo venture is more rock-pop. There are still elements of folk, funk and jazz, though. It’s a strong collection that any fan of Julieta Venegas or Bebe should enjoy. Here debut album Mediocre was released a few weeks ago. Listen to the track Vidas Paralelas (Parallel Lives) below:

Bring Us Into Daylight

Eisly is a family band (four siblings and a cousin) based out of Tyler, TX. Their sophomore effort Combinations (released last year) retains familiar sounds and themes heard on their debut. More of the same, at least in this case, is not a bad thing.

Their style features typical pop elements with hints of alt-country and folk. Along with endearing vocals from Sherri and Staci DuPree, their songs are dreamy and lilting. For the longest time, I couldn't get enough of Come Clean. The song is a beautiful ballad about distrust, with an underlying aching theme. Despite the subject, you can't help but sing along.

Now I'm hooked on the title track, with soft strings and trumpets pushing the vocals to the forefront. It's an elegant love song devoid of any triteness. Makes me wish I weren't single!

A co-worker of mine tends to have issues sharing all the details of her life with you. We hear and see it all - from their dating life to where their latest rash is at. Well, at least I thought I had seen it all.

This morning she got all excited and wanted to show us some pictures of her seven month old niece. She told us that it was of her very first hard boo boo, so we were expecting a bruise. UH UH. She showed us the baby's first hard piece o' SH*T! I told her that she shouldn't be showing that, but then she turned around a little later and wanted to show it to someone else who had been running late and didn't get to see it.

I wish I could say I was joking.

Staring At The Sink Of Blood And Crushed Veneer

As is the case with many an artist, a break-up can do wonders for your work. All that frustration, grief and turmoil needs to be let out, so why not channel it by doing something creative, no? Newly solo singer-songwriter Bon Iver is no exception, although his break-up wasn’t with a lover. It was with his long-time band DeYarmond Edison.

As winter rolled in, Iver picked up and moved to a remote cabin in northern Wisconsin. He spent a total of three months living the simple life, filling his days with tasks such as chopping wood. The result of this self-exploration were the songs for his debut album For Emma, Forever Ago.

The album is certainly a thing of beauty. Below is an excerpt from Last.fm:

For Emma's tracks consist of thick layers draped in lush choral walls, with rarely more than an ancient acoustic guitar or the occasional bass drum providing structure. Vernon sings the majority of the record in falsetto, which painfully expresses the meanings behind its overt, yet strangely entangled words. This newfound vocal path acts as each song's main character and source of melody.

A big thanks goes out to my friend Adam. While I already had his first single, Skinny Love (listen to it below), it had become buried by a slew of other new songs that came in. He mentioned the artist to me on Friday and I picked up the album over the weekend. It is highly recommended.

I dare you to watch this and NOT get the song stuck in your head. Oh, and you have They Might Be Giants to thank for this so-bad-its-good tune. Yes, it's for a show aimed at toddlers, but why should you let that stop you?

It's one of those songs that you find cute and funny the first few times you hear it, but then you kind of want to kill yourself to put a stop to the endless loop its on in your head.

I'd Weather All Of This

Tift Merritt is known for her alt country stylings; however, that's almost non-existent in her latest outing, Another Country. This album is more inspired by the likes of Joni Mitchell and other folk artists of the seventies.

On first single, Keep You Happy, you can hear the anguish behind her elegant vocals, but the song remains uplifting. The remainder of the album is about the same. The songs are beautiful and poignant, with an underlying sorrow that never overwhelms. It is easily one of the better albums so far this year. Check out Keep You Happy below:

I've been absent for the past several days. It wasn't for a lack of material to post, I just felt like a few days away from blogging. But now I'm back.

Young Love is a song I've been meaning to post here for some time, but I just never got around to it until now. It's from a hot new artist with a knack for performing in high heels and make-up (which really isn't all that uncommon if you really think about it). His real name is Oskar Humlebo, but he's better known as Moto Boy. While it's not his first single, it's the one that has brought him widespread acclaim across the blogosphere as of late. And for good reason. It's a simple, beautiful pop song about love that sweeps you up and keeps you hooked. But don't take my word for it, judge for yourself.

Newly proclaimed lesbo Sia is the latest to strip a Britney Spears song down to it's most basic...and to improve upon the embattled star's own over-produced version. In its new simple form, the fragility is brought to the forefront. Where Britney's version is pure guilty-pleasure, Sia's rendition is lovely and guilt-free. Then again, she could sing a grocery list and make it sound phenomenal.

Be Whoever Comes Into Your Head

The Brighton-based rock band The Kooks are back with their new single, Always Where I Need To Be. Their sophomore effort Konk (named for the London studio the set was recorded in) will be released by Virgin on March 14 in the UK. They have a few shows in the US, so I'm certain that they are prepping for a US release sometime in the near future.

As for the single, I haven't decided if I really like it. It's definitely not bad, but it lacks the appeal that the previous three singles (Naive, She Moves In Her Own Way and Ooh La) had. Those contained instantly catchy hooks that had you craving frequent listens. Always... appears to be a grower. It's still in line with their previous works as it is a fun, upbeat pop song.

Bullet Dodged

OK, OK, I feel silly getting all excited about this, but one of my favourite (and guiltiest of pleasures) this television season was the Angie Harmon (pictured) lead procedural drama Women's Murder Club. It had all but expired when it was suddenly resuscitated for three more episodes. Despite rumours that it would be rescheduled as an Angie solo project, it has been confirmed that the only major changes will be behind the scenes. Law & Order vet Robert Nathan has been brought on board as the show-runner and he'll be overseeing it's return to the airwaves some time in April.

It's probably a little more exciting for me considering television and movies are what will mostly be keeping me company until my relocation to Brooklyn. I doubt that I would care too much under normal circumstances. haha

F**kin' Hilarious

You Stand To Win Everything

The Oscars have come and gone, and it was a memorable evening indeed. No majour upsets in my opinion, with the exception of the unfortunate mess worn by Tilda Swinton (pictured). She's a stunning beauty, but why she chose to wear that dress (and I use that term very loosely) is beyond me. It's almost as if someone tried creating a graduation gown out of a Hefty garbage bag and just didn't get to left sleeve in time.

That fashion disaster aside, tonight was the first time I have ever attended an Oscar party. It was a small gathering at a friend's flat, but it proved to be very enjoyable. It was nice to catch up with the hosts, as I don't really get to see either of them too often. Of course, everyone had their prediction ballot and the person with the most correct guesses would take home the coveted Blue Ball award (it's really just a blue sphere paperweight that the flat owner wanted to pawn off on someone). Naturally, being the only single person there, I won. I correctly guessed 17 out of the 24 awards handed out. There was a change to my choice for Best Actress. I believe I said here that Cate Blancett would win, but I changed my mind and went with Swinton. Due to that change, I correctly guess the eight majour awards (Picture, Director, all Acting, both Screenplays).

This year the awards were pretty much well spread-out, as no Best Film nominee walked away empty handed. Not surprisingly, No Country For Old Men walked away with the most, including the top prize. There Will Be Blood earned wins in two categories it was expected to win, but the owner of the mind that dreamed up this film (Paul Thomas Anderson) walked away empty handed. Original Screenplay went to the deserving Betty Rubble, errr, Diablo Cody (check out her dress and you'll understand the reference) for Juno. And the only film with multiple acting nods, Michael Clayton, walked home with just one statuette in the acting field(Best Supporting Actress for the aforementioned Swinton). The most pleasing part of the show is when Marketa Irglova hit the stage twice for her win for Best Song for the film Once. They brought her back out after a commercial break since she got cut off before she could give her acceptance speech. Hers was a sweet, tender one, so I'm glad that they brought her back out. For the first time I have seen all nominated films prior to the ceremony. Atonement is your typical Oscar fare. It was actually rather boring and failed to maintain my attention for long periods of time. Michael Clayton may have its share of impressive performances, but, as a whole, the film is not Best Picture material. It will fair better in the Best Actress In A Supporting Role category, where Tilda Swinton's buzz has been surging in the final days leading up to the ceremony. And then there is Juno, that light-hearted, crowd-pleasing little blockbuster that could. While I am a huge fan of this film, I honestly hope it doesn't pull an upset and take this category. Yes, it's a fun movie, but it just didn't have the weight needed, in my opinion.

The way I see it, I'll only be happy if either NCFOM or TWBB take home this award. TWBB doesn't have the edge here, though. It's audience tend to be split down the middle. For everyone person that got it and loved it, there's someone else who found no redeeming value. Yes, it was a little psychologically disturbing, but it's quite stunning if you allow yourself to get wrapped up in it. While director Paul Thomas Anderson certainly has his loyal followers, I think that this film is just going to have to settle for runner-up status in most categories where it competes with No Country. Speaking of, that film has everything going for it. A return to form by its directors Joel and Ethan Coen. Brilliant and balanced performances from the actors. A well done adaption. Everything has just seemed to line up with this one. It is the most well-rounded film, with no one nomination outshining another. And the main reason I feel this is going to win is that the excitement I felt when I watched it in the theatre several months ago is still fresh.

Here's To Being Here, the new album from Jason Collett, was released earlier this month. After giving it a go a few times, I'm growing rather fond of his sophomore solo effort. It's essentially folk with a dash of rock sprinkled in to give it a little more bite. As is evident with the track I have posted below (Through The Night These Days), it is also relatively mellow. In a good way, though. I definitely recommend it.

It Was Astoundingly Still

I've only heard the one song from D.C.-based rock band These United States, but it's good enough for me to recommend you keep your ear out for more from the group. Jesse Elliott commissioned some 30+ area musicians to create their debut album, A Picture Of The Three Of Us At The Gate To The Garden Of Eden. It is due for release early next month (March 4th for those of you in the US). The lead single, First Sight, is a decent pop song and introduction (the remainder of their work may not be as easily accessible).

Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country For Old Men

Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell & The Butterfly

Lets be honest, does anyone really think that either Reitman or Gilroy are actually going to hear their name called in this category? While both of them delivered tremendous films and guided their actors to fantastic performances, they aren't really one of the main draws for their respective film. Schnabel does have a shot (especially since a lot of people think he actually won the Director's Guild Award after that incident with a washed-up drunk), but he's still a long shot at this point. So it really comes down to PTA and the Coen Bros. The Coens have the edge, in my opinion, because their contribution hasn't been overshadowed despite the tremendous buzz around the actors. Meanwhile, I think most people think of Daniel Day-Lewis when There Will Be Blood comes up. I think almost any other year would be PTA's, but not this year. This year belongs to the Coen Bros.

Prediction: Coen Bros. (Should and Will Win)

Cate Blanchett may be the first actor to receive two nominations for playing the same character, but, while it was the kind of powerful performance we've come to expect of the actress, this isn't her category to win this year. And while she carried the entire film on her shoulders and is the major reason for the film's success, Ellen Page will most likely be going home empty handed. The same can be said for Laura Linney. Hers was a brilliantly subtle work, but it left me so depressed afterward. So that makes this come down to Julie Christie and Marion Cotillard. Christie was ahead early on winning many awards and lots of buzz. However, the downside of an early lead is that it typically dies down too soon. And that's right where Cotillard has swooped in, nabbing the last few awards before the big one. In all honesty, I haven't yet seen La Vie En Rose yet. I tried to, but I just wasn't in the mood. But it doesn't always come down to whether or not you've seen a movie. It's usually about who has the most buzz, and right now it's Cotillard.

Prediction: Christie (Should Win)/Cotillard (Will Win)

Just when you thought I had gone through the entire cataloug of Swedish pop artists, here I am posting about another one. Britta Persson is a pop artist in the vein of all those other female singer-songwriters with soft voices and upbeat tunes (any of the countless that have been heard on Grey's Anatomy or on a iPod or Zune commercial). Earlier this year, she released her sophomore effort Kill Hollywood Me. While the majority of it doesn't stand out from the pack, there are a few choice tracks on it. One of them is In Or Out, which you can listen to below:
